Liquid Nitrogen Service |
DESCRIPTION OF UNIT:
Presently, an in-house (Pharmacy) service for liquid nitrogen is available to all laboratories whom have signed-up for this service with MIH. Nitrogen dewars are kept in room 1119 (accesible with coded FOB). Personnel whom are uncertain of the status of their laboratory with respect to this service can consult the posted laboratory list in room 1119. Laboratory charges for this service are assessed quarterly. It is assumed that the average laboratory using this service requires ~10 liters of liquid nitrogen per week. In the event that you average requirements are significantly greater, simply contact Dr. Henderson to update him.
Prior to obtaining liquid nitrogen, make sure that you have received the proper trainingm and understand proper handling procedures for liquid nitrogen and liquid N2 containers. This includes having a proper transport container, faceshield and protective gloves.
In the event that the nitrogen is supply depleted when you need nitrogen, any member of the staff (P.I. or graduate student) can issue an order for nitrogen re-supply by following the instructions on the information card posted in room 1119. In the event that you place an order for nitrogen, (1) write the date of your order down on the sheet in room 1119, (2) hang the "nitrogen has been ordered" sign around the neck of the empty nitrogen tank, (3) insure that the nitrogen order you placed has indeed been filled (then check the "arrived ?" box on the sign-up sheet), (4) when nitrogen arrives, place the receipt in the "N2 receipts" folder in room 1119. Typically liquid nitrogen re-supply orders are filled within 24-48 hours.
In the event of any problems, questions, or groups wishing to join this service, individuals should leave a message with the MIH or email Dr. Henderson.
